|各家論述=1.《金匱要略論注》：虛極不可無補，但非他味參、朮所宜，惡其壅而燥也。亦非芩，澤淡滲可治，恐傷液也。唯甘草之甘涼，清中即所以補中；阿膠之滯潤，去風即所以和血。以此治病即以此為大補，方知凡痢者濕熱非苦寒不除，故類聚4味之苦寒不為過。若和血安中，只1味甘草及阿膠而有餘。治痢好用參、朮者，政由未悉此理耳。2.《金匱玉函經二注》：傷寒厥陰證下利重者，白頭翁湯，4味盡苦寒以治熱，苦以堅腸胃。此產後氣血兩虛，因加阿膠補氣血而止利，甘草緩中通血脈。然下利，血沸也，夫人之血行則利自止，甘草尤為要藥。此方豈獨治產後哉。<br />
|臨床應用=痢疾：患者女，60餘歲。痢下赤白，日數十遍，裏急後重。曾服呋喃西林2日，效果不顯，發熱不高，口幹，尚不作渴，舌質淡紅，舌邊呈細小赤點。幹而無津，脈象細數。認為老年津血不足，又患熱痢，津血更易耗損。擬白頭翁加甘草阿膠湯：白頭翁12g，黃連6g，川黃柏6g，秦皮9g，阿膠9g（烊），甘草6g，煎至200毫升，分2次服。上午服第1劑，至晚大便已變糞，續進1劑病癒。<br />
